This course is required for all those who would like to work in the clean up of oil spills or other dangerous chemicals. It is expressly designed for workers who are involved in clean-up operations, voluntary and response operations, storage, disposal, and/or treatment of hazardous substances or uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Most of the actual work in Alaska is around oil spills, fueling activities and clean-up of other hazardous materials. The Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) applies to five groups:
1. Clean-up operations that are conducted at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites or by government requirement.
2. Corrective actions involving clean-up operations at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA) as amended (42 U.S.C. 6901 et seq.);
3. Voluntary clean-up operations at sites recognized by federal, state, local, or other governmental body as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites;
4. Operations involving hazardous wastes that are conducted at treatment, storage, and disposal facilities regulated by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations Parts 264 and 265 pursuant to RCRA, or by agencies under agreement with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to implement RCRA regulations; and
5. Emergency response operations for releases of, or substantial threats of releases of, hazardous substances regardless of the location of the hazard.
Students can have a mustache, but no Beards. (Respirator Fit Testing)
The HAZWOPER training covers: implementation of the employer’s emergency response plan, classification/identification of unknown materials, selection and use of specialized chemical protective equipment, hazard/risk assessment techniques, performing product control operations. There are going to be more oil spills in Alaska and this is the class you need, if you want to work on the clean-up.
Course requires annual refresher to work and certification is void if over 2 years since last class.
